SHORT ON TIME? TRY EXERCISE VIDEOS!




You should consider purchasing exercise videos if you would like to have an instructor guide you through a workout but don't have the time to go to a class. Videos are the best of both worlds. You can use it at your own convenience and you reap the benefits of an instructor. They are also inexpensive!


Videos are very popular with beginners and those who are overweight. Many beginners and overweight individuals are very self conscious about going to the gym. I know, I was very self conscious when I first started at the gym!


Sometimes it seems that the gym is packed full of people who are already in shape! Where are the overweight people? Where are the beginners who don’t know a dumbbell from a resistance band? Doing an exercise video at home can help you get into shape without you feeling that you are being scrutinized by others.


When you shop around for videos you will probably find that most of them are marked for the beginner, intermediate or advanced workouts. If you have not worked out in a long time you should opt for the beginner video. If you have only been working out for a few months you can try the intermediate video. If you're an exercise nut, you probably need the advanced video.


Something else you should look for in the video is how long the workouts are. If the workout lasts for an hour you should be honest with yourself about whether you will have an hour to workout. If not, skip that video and find one that is not as long. For the cost of paying your dues at a gym you could have an entire set of videos.



You should look for an exercise video that will help you accomplish your exercise goals.


What do you want to do? Step aerobics? Kickboxing? Strength training? Yoga? Don’t waste your money on a video that only has five minutes of strength training on it. If that is what you are interested in doing. Make sure you understand exactly what the video offers before you purchase it. Is there any equipment that is needed to be able to do the video? Does the video assume you have an exercise ball or resistance bands? If so, do you have those?


Try borrowing a video from a friend or rent it at a local video store. With no investment you will be able to do various workouts and decide on the one that will work for you.


If you decide a video is the route you want to take.


It is important to keep a few things in mind.

1. Purchasing the video and having it in your home will not get you in shape. You will have to actually put it into your DVD or VHS player and do the exercises along with the instructor!

2. You should stretch out prior to doing an exercise video. Some allow enough time for stretching and some jump right into the exercise.

3. It is important that you do exactly what you are instructed to do on the video. Having the proper form when you are exercising will decrease your risk of injury.

4. If you are doing an exercise video at home and you are interrupted by a child needing something or the telephone, try to keep your heart rate up by moving until you can return to your video.
